Novo Remedial Solutions was appointed to carry out comprehensive concrete repair works at Joseph’s Place, Derry.

Project Description

Novo Remedial Solutions was appointed to carry out comprehensive concrete repair works at Joseph’s Place, Derry. The project focused on addressing structural deterioration caused by reinforced concrete defects and ensuring long-term durability through the installation of a cathodic protection system. The works were delivered on behalf of CFM for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE).

Scope of Works

The project involved a full remedial package, including:

  • Removal of Defective Concrete: All deteriorated and contaminated concrete was carefully broken out to expose affected reinforcement. This ensured that repairs were applied to sound substrates and eliminated sources of ongoing corrosion.
  • Cathodic Protection System Installation: A cathodic protection (CP) system, supplied by CPT, was installed to mitigate future corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement. The system was designed to extend the lifespan of the structure by actively controlling corrosion processes.
  • Concrete Repairs: Structural repairs were carried out using high-build repair mortars. These materials were selected for their durability, compatibility with existing concrete, and ability to restore structural integrity.
  • Fairing Coat Application: A fairing coat was applied across the full structure to provide a uniform surface finish, improve aesthetics, and prepare substrates for final coatings.
  • Protective Coating System: An elastomeric paint system was applied to the entire structure. This flexible, weather-resistant coating provides long-term protection against moisture ingress, carbonation, and environmental exposure.

Testing and Commissioning

Upon completion of installation, the cathodic protection system was fully tested and commissioned to ensure it met performance specifications. System verification confirmed that protection levels were achieved across all treated areas, ensuring long-term corrosion control.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Extent of Concrete Deterioration: Detailed surveys were required to accurately identify all defective areas. Targeted breakout and repair methodologies ensured efficient and effective remediation.
  • Integration of CP System with Repairs: Close coordination between repair works and CP installation was essential. Sequencing was carefully managed to ensure system components were properly embedded and protected.

Outcomes

  • Restoration of structural integrity across the affected areas
  • Long-term corrosion protection through an active CP system
  • Enhanced durability and reduced maintenance requirements
  • Improved visual appearance of the structure
  • Successful delivery in line with client expectations and specifications

Conclusion

The Joseph’s Place project demonstrates Novo Remedial Solutions’ capability in delivering complex concrete repair and corrosion mitigation works. By combining high-quality repair techniques with advanced cathodic protection technology, the project ensures a durable and sustainable solution for the client.
