Client

Kerrs Tyres

Location

Antrim, Northern Ireland

Sector

Doff Steam Cleaning, Protective Coatings

This project involved the specification, testing and application of protective coating systems for structural steel and metal elements within a commercial building.

Project Description

This project involved the specification, testing and application of protective coating systems for structural steel and metal elements within a commercial building. The works included fire protection using intumescent coatings, corrosion protection for exposed steelwork, and specialist coatings for metal roof cladding.

The objective was to ensure long-term durability, compliance with fire safety standards and resistance to environmental exposure.

Project Requirements

  • Fire resistance ratings of 30, 60 and 90 minutes for structural steel
  • Corrosion protection aligned with environmental classification
  • Durable systems with minimal maintenance requirements
  • High-quality aesthetic finish for exposed steelwork
  • Full compatibility across all coating layers

Testing & Assessment

A comprehensive inspection and testing regime was carried out prior to installation to ensure correct product selection and system performance.

  • Environmental conditions assessed in line with exposure classifications
  • Steel substrates inspected for contaminants and existing coatings
  • Abrasive blasting trials completed to achieve required preparation standards
  • Surface profile and cleanliness testing undertaken
  • Adhesion and compatibility testing carried out on sample areas

Coating Systems

Intumescent Fire Protection

  • Anti-corrosive primer system
  • Intumescent coating providing fire resistance
  • Protective topcoat where required
  • Fire ratings achieved up to 90 minutes

Corrosion Protection

  • Multi-coat system tailored to environmental conditions
  • Enhanced edge protection applied
  • Designed for long-term durability

Roof Cladding & Metal Elements

  • Coatings applied to roof sheets and flashings
  • Resistance to UV exposure and water ingress
  • Flexible systems to accommodate movement and weathering

Application Process

  • Abrasive surface preparation and cleaning
  • Controlled application using spray, roller or brush
  • Monitoring of environmental conditions throughout
  • Wet and dry film thickness testing
  • Inspection and quality control at each stage

Outcome

  • Fire protection requirements successfully achieved
  • Corrosion protection aligned with exposure conditions
  • Improved durability and service life of steel elements
  • Compliance with relevant standards and specifications

Conclusion

The project demonstrated the importance of a carefully specified and tested coating strategy. By combining detailed assessment with high-performance systems, long-term protection, durability and compliance were successfully achieved across all steel elements.
